I'm always asked a question, why more young people don't admit they are nudists or naturists. This story is a perfect example.
School teachers for instance are terrified that someone will find out as they could lose their jobs. Sadly, nudists are treated the same way as gays were treated 30 years ago.
Here's the story:
"Paramedic 'bullied over naturism'
...A paramedic accused of misconduct was bullied at work because of being a naturist, a hearing has been told...
Colleague Pat Kenworthy told the Health Professions' Council committee that a small group of employees had gossiped about Mrs Armitage's lifestyle.
She told the HPC Mrs Armitage had been the victim of "malicious backstabbing".
Ms Kenworthy told the conduct and competence committee she had worked with Mrs Armitage for 20 years and her behaviour at work was perfectly normal.
Asked what aspect of her lifestyle attracted comment, she replied: "That she is a naturist.
She added that some members of staff questioned whether Mrs Armitage had visited a local sex club...
...She said: "He also made a great number of remarks about my personal life which Mrs Kenworthy has already explained.
"He just seemed to think it was highly amusing and the more upset I got about it the worse he became."
The only way to counter closed minded people is for more people to come out of the closet nude.
Mary Clare and I are proud to be nudists. We have nude photos all over the web. We tell as many people as possible that we are nudists.
I was just at a the Council of State Governments meeting last week helping to man AANR's booth. We had state legislators from all over the US come to our booth. Some giggled, some snickered, one from Oregon congratulated AANR on working so well with the Oregon Parks department at Rooster Rock nude beach.
Every once in a while we got a "well I don't know about that" type of comment. I immediately always told the person, that I had been elected the president of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce that has over 1000 members. If the local business community put their trust in a nudist I think you should too. Every time I said that the reaction was a big "WoW." It opened their eyes that nudists can be normal successful business people.
I hope as many people as possible work up the courage and tell their friends and family that they're nudists or that they enjoy nude recreation. It's the only way to get rid of people wrong ideas about nudism.

November 18, 2009 Make your next vacation Terra Cotta Inn, We're a Bargain
The Terra Cotta Inn was just mentioned on MSNBC as being a bargain vacation resort. Yet, we still find some nudists are fooled by come ons from textile resorts and book textile instead of at our resort.
A couple of weeks ago we had a couple here, their first time, that stayed at a trendy textile hotel in the Palm Springs area. They came to our resort everyday for day use.
I asked why didn't you book there, why didn't you book with us. The guests were members of The Naturist Society, TNS and had been nudists for about 15 years. I was told "Frankly we booked at a textile hotel because it was cheaper. We have to watch our pennies this year."
Now I know we're considered the best value of ALL hotels and resorts in Palm Springs. We can't beat Motel 6 prices, but then there is a world of difference between them and us as far as amenities, quality and true value.
The day use couple told us, where they were staying, it was only $99/night. They said it was on "sale" 50% off and our resort was $149/night and not on "sale." Now I know the place they mentioned. They do the sneaky resort fees and pay for parking and breakfast. And I know their $99/night rooms are really tiny and are a come on to up sell people.
And I know all year long their tiny rooms have been $99/night with the phony 50% off sale. Whereas their rooms that are nice sized rooms like ours are $169/night.
So I said, OK you paid $99 for 7 nights that's $693. They said no, the weekend rate was $139, it's only $99 midweek (I didn't know that). So they paid $813 for the week. They then paid $175 in resort fees, $154 in parking, they spent on average of $30-$40 for breakfast ($6 orange juice and $4 coffee plus tips add up) or about $245. Then they spent $160 on day use fees at our resort for 6 days. All together their $99/night room cost them for a week = $1547 or $221/night. And they had to wear bathing suits in the evening at their hotel to use the jacuzzi which they complained about all week long.
Our weekly rate is $959/couple/week or $137/night or 38% cheaper!!! Plus, we give the guests complimentary snacks in the afternoon. There are NO hidden extras.
People need to look at the overall cost of their vacations, not the come on price.
Sadly this couple told us they never called us or the other nudist places in Palm Springs. they just saw the ad for the $99 50% off and booked there without giving any nudist resort a chance to show what great values we are. I bet you these people when they're at nude beaches say to their friends "why aren't there more nudist places to go to in the US?"
Nudists need to support the nudist organizations like AANR and TNS. And they need to support the nudist industry. I will bet we lost about 3% in occupancy this year from nudists staying at textile hotels with false economies of savings and coming here for day use.
I've always been telling readers that our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa is the best value resort in Palm Springs. And now Chris Elliott of MSNBC agrees by mentioning us. Yes, we are a fantastic value which is one of the reasons why we are so popular.
We are NOT overpriced like the nudist Caribbean and Mexican places owned by non nudists. We are the best value in town

We are the most mainstream nudist resort in the US and perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time.
Last week, Chris Elliott, the MSNBC and National Geographic reporter did an interview on TV on why your next vacation should be a clothing optional vacation. See my blog post and the TV report By Clicking Here
He mentioned our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn as one of the reasons why you should vacation in the nude.
Liz Egger, who wrote the book "The Complete Guide to Nudism and Naturism," had written an article earlier about the "Six Good reasons to take a nudist vacation."
Reason number 6 is very important. Here it is:
Reason #6 Nudist entrepreneurs need our support.
Despite estimates that the world nude travel business is worth some four hundred million USD annually and growing fast, the nudist holiday industry is still a fragile plant that needs encouragement and support. The fine nudist resorts that cater to the nudist holidaymaker today are a far cry from the primitive camps that were available in the not too distant past, and by attracting the new generation of vacationers who demand a certain standard of comfort, are in a large part responsible for the growth of the nude leisure industry. However, quality costs money, and these resorts are businesses, not charities. Unless we continue to support them they'll close, and we'll return to the old clapped out, run down, make-do-and-mend compounds of yesteryear. As the old saying goes, you have to use 'em or lose 'em
This is so, so important. I hear people say "why should I support AANR, they do nothing for me." Well one of the big things they do is public relations. They tell the world how much fun nudism is. Nudist resorts like ours also let people know nudism is mainstream and fun.
If it wasn't for the public relations from nudist resorts and AANR the turnout at nude beaches would be pretty small as people wouldn't know that its fun.
Most nudist places are still just weekend getaways. Part of the reason is they don't have the revenue to improve their resorts and to advertise so they can attract vacationers. People need to vacation at them more.
We have always catered to vacationers. We are popular 7 days a week. However even we need more business. This year we will have dropped from a nudist industry high 81% year round occupancy rate to about a 75% rate. Sadly it is due to so many people losing jobs and or their houses.
Our rates are a bargain, yet, we still find nudists will not support the American nudist industry. They will way overpay to go to places in the Caribbean or Mexico not owned by nudists. Or they will stay at textile hotels thinking they are a "bargain" and not stay at nudist hotels.
The different immigrant groups like Italians, Poles, Chinese, etc. shopped at their fellow countryman's stores to support their communities. It's time for nudists to do the same.
The Los Angeles Times just printed a hotel "deal" for a textile hotel in Palm Springs. Book now and get 40% off! Rates only $161/night, regularly $269. At that hotel, I don't think anyone has EVER paid $269/night. The true rate right now is the $161. This is not a deal.
When I was president of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, I toured that hotel. Their rooms are nice like our rooms at The Terra Cotta Inn. And at $161 that should be the regular rate.
They make up a phony rack rate of $269 so they can offer phony discounts. This particular hotel also has a resort fee of $25 plus if you want to stay late for instance to 5 pm like our guests can, they charge and additional $75.
So let's compare someone checking coming in January on a Mon and Tues night. They want to check in early, but can't. They have to wait until 4pm. They pay $161/night. They have $25/night resort fees. They pay $30-35 for breakfast. They don't get free afternoon snacks like we serve. Then if they stay until 5pm they pay an extra $75 for a total phony discount of $367 or $183.50/night. And the Los Angeles Times is fooled and thinks this is a bargain?
In January, our resort The Terra Cotta inn clothing optional resort and spa has a real discount on Monday thru Thursday nights of stay 1 night, the 2nd is half priced. Breakfast is complimentary as is afternoon snacks. No resort fees, You can check in as early as 10am and stay until 5 pm at no extra charge. Our guests would pay $223.50 and get to stay longer and have better amenities. Sadly though, the Los Angeles times does not print our real bargain.
Last week Chris Elliott, the MSNBC and National Geopgraphic Traveler magazine travel reporter was on TV and pointed out that nudist resorts are a bargain. Our resort was one of three nudist resorts in the US that he mentioned that were particularly good bargains.
Many nudists fall for these phony deals. In my next blog posts I will discuss this.

This year, we have booked more room nights from Canadian guests at our resort than we have from Southern Californian guests. Canadians just can't get enough of our fun clothing optional resort.

Last week, I was at a government convention with Carolyn Hawkins the public relations person at AANR, the American Association for Nude Recreation. We were discussing how nudism is becoming more mainstream and who it is harder than ever to get good pr for nudism as it is considered pretty normal now by the press.
Nude recreation week no longer is a big deal with the press. Neither is nude concerts.
The big home run in the nudist pr field this year was the Guinness naked skinny dip.
If anyone has any great public relations ideas let me know by e-mailing them to me at tom@sunnyfun.com or drop me a tweet.
Zappos tried using a "nudist" campaign for their shoes and clothes and that just wasn't enough to send it viral on the net.
Here's the story:
"Zappos’ Nudist Viral Campaign: Boon or Bust?
Was the recently completed Zappos viral video campaign an innovative success or a resounding flop? Depends which analyst you ask.
David Halberstam, an eMarketer analyst lauded the campaign, which featured the “World’s Fastest Nudist” running around New York in a fanny pack, for the “captivating videos that worked because people could imagine them being real.”
But Nate Elliott, a Forrester Research analyst, looked at the numbers, calling the campaign “a pretty resounding flop,” because of the low viewer tally. Of the 15 videos in the series, the highest video received only about 23,000 views at YouTube. According to published reports, the entire series received 60,000 YouTube views and 25,000 at the other video sites and blogs where the virals were seeded, including Vimeo, Break.com, Collegehumor.com, Gawker, the Gothamist and the Huffington Post...
The goal of the campaign was to boost visits to the Zappos website, but Manni said he doesn’t have the numbers yet...
“The client asked us to drive traffic to their site for clothing sales, so we developed a viral video campaign and created the world’s fastest nudist, a character the represents the opposite of the offering,” Manni said. “He’s fast, but Zappos is faster than he is and catches him at the end and clothes him.”
He lauded the campaign for its “cute, benign theme, trying to show the nudist on real city streets.” He also praised the low cost look of the videos. They were shot with cell phone and other hand held cameras to create the viral look by Bullet, a production company..."

In December and January excluding the holidays, we have our best rates of the year.
We are the most mainstream nudist resort in the US and perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time.
Tripadvisor just reported their 10 holiday hotel hideouts for shaking the season's stress. They picked independent properties and smaller hotels, which was nice. Too bad they didn't get really brave and pick a clothing optional or nudist resort like ours.
As everyone who has ever been to a clothing optional or nudist resort knows, the best nude hotels really help you de-stress fast. As guests all say, 2 days at Terra Cotta Inn is like a week anywhere else for de-stessing. And a week here feels like a month 2 weeks away anywhere else. You truly are in a different, happy world at Terra Cotta Inn.
Here's the Tripadvisor's story:
"TRIPADVISOR TOUTS TEN HOLIDAY HOTEL HIDEOUTS TO SHAKE THE SEASON'S STRESS "Go/No Go Index" Helps Travelers Escape the Holiday Rush by Digging Up Off-the-Beaten-Path Alternatives to Larger, Overrun Hotels
..."With the craziness of the holiday season nigh, travelers seeking a quiet retreat from the madness need look no further: TripAdvisor site data has revealed undiscovered hotel havens for the holiday season. These hidden-gem properties are among the most popular on TripAdvisor.com, larger and busier — counterparts. Travelers may want to ... head straight for the "Go" hotels for more obscure but still highly-rated hotel escapes — (hopefully with nary a nagging mother-in-law in sight)."
Tripadvisor.com has the right idea. I don't really like Conde Nast Traveler Magazine that much as it profiles the same boring big chain hotels in different parts of the world all the time. True, sometimes they profile independents, but not that often.
Whereas, tripadvisor knows in the travel industry that bigger does not mean better.
Last year, tripadvisor.com profiled the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world, and they picked Terra Cotta Inn as one of them.
But, for example, when they profile the best value hotels in Palm Springs, they completely ignored our resort, whereas everyone else in town knows we are one of the best values in Palm Springs. Even Chris Elliott the National Geographic Traveler and MSNBC travel reporter reported we are a bargain.
It's still hard in the travel industry for the "mainstream" travel industry to include nudist and clothing optional resorts. Even here in Palm Springs, Terra Cotta has one of the highest occupancy rates of ALL hotels in town, yet our tourism board never mentions us to the press as one of the most popular of ALL hotels in town because they consider us a specialty niche hotel. They don't consider us as regular boutique resort where people go nude sunbathing which is what we are.
Our tourism board only tells the press about us if they ask for information about nudist resorts. Instead, we should be mentioned with textile hotels whenever the press comes to town.
But that is another battle for me to fight. And it will be an uphill battle. I am a past president of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and I still have not changed their ways.
And I want tripadvisor.com to know, our clothing optional resort, The Terra Cotta Inn competes very well with mainstream hotels. Remember, we used to be ranked #3 of ALL hotels in Palm Springs on the tripadvisor Palm Springs hotel ranking page until you pulled us out of that category and put us in with bed and breakfasts which we are not one.
So if you want the perfect hotel hideout to de-stress this season, think clothing optional. Think Terra Cotta Inn.
Now is the time to try something different and fun. Give us a call at 800-786-6938.

I just got back from the AANR West Board of directors meeting. I am the pr chair. AANR West started a twitter account in August. We are now going to start a Facebook account. The boards aim it to embrace social media as much as possible so that members and potential guests of nudist resorts can contact us as easily as possible.
The NY Times just had an article on businesses using Facebook. Here it is:
"Business owner, you might want to friend Facebook.
Identify a short list of goals before you begin.
Show some personality in your page.
Don't shill. Use your page to engage-and trust that sales will follow.
Use Facebook data to analyze your customer demographics.
A growing number of businesses are making Facebook an indispensable part of hanging out their shingles. Small businesses are using it to find new customers, build online communities of fans and dig into gold mines of demographic information.
“You need to be where your customers are and your prospective customers are,” said Clara Shih, author of “The Facebook Era” (Pearson Education, 2009). “And with 300 million people on Facebook, and still growing, that’s increasingly where your audience is for a lot of products and services.”
...Facebook offers an array of tools and networks, and it’s easy to wander down too many paths. Ms. Shih recommends that newcomers start by asking themselves a simple question: What is your basic objective? Is it getting more customers in the door? Building brand awareness? Creating a venue for customer support? Once you have set your goal, you can strategize accordingly.
...You can enliven your page with photos, comments and useful information. As you grow more comfortable, you can add videos or business applications. Flaunt your personality. The page of an ice cream parlor should feel different than that of a funeral parlor. “The pages that are most successful,” said Tim Kendall, the director of monetization at Facebook, “are the ones that really replicate the personality of the business.”
Aim at Potential Customers Only
...“I’d be out of business if I didn’t have Facebook,” Mr. Meyer said. “Especially with this economy, I need to stretch each marketing dollar as much as I possibly can.”
Facebook enables small businesses to engage in targeted marketing that they only could have dreamed about a few years ago. Facebook users fill out profiles with information like hometown, employer, religious beliefs, interests, education and favorite books, movies and TV shows — all of which can help advertisers deliver messages to specific demographic slices.
...“Be patient with it,” Mr. Nelson advised. “People are not going to flock to your social media site overnight. Technology is about the network effect. It takes time for those connections to build.”
Close to 25% of our business comes from guests who do not live in the US. They are mainly Canadians, Brits, and Australians. Although we do get other Europeans, Africans, Asians, etc.
Canadians say US immigration is pretty good especially since they clear it in Canada. However, all other guests always complain about US immigration, and how they are the most unwelcoming people and how hard it is to travel to the US.
Europeans always say if it wasn't for vacationing at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, they would never come back for a vacation in the US again.
This is really sad and it translates into keeping away overseas visitors.
Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the US. It helps the US balance of trade as tourists spend money in the US. Yet, the federal government makes it so hard for tourists to vacation in America.
A new survey shows interest is up in the US, but travel is not. Here it is: | "New Survey: Interest in America Grows, Fails to Translate into More Visitors
Concerns about ‘Fortress America’ Keeping Overseas Arrivals Down
Travel Industry Calls for Public-Private Solutions to Spur Inbound Travel New Survey: Interest in America Grows, Fails to Translate into More Visitors
Washington, DC – November 2009 – Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, issued the following statement Friday (November 6) on the Country Brand Index (CBI) released by FutureBrand, in conjunction with Weber Shandwick’s Global Travel & Lifestyle Practice. The index revealed that the United States is the world’s top country brand for the first time in the fifth annual CBI, rising from the third spot in 2008.
“Perceptions of the United States are on the rise - a tribute to President Obama and the people of this great country. But if interest in the United States is growing, then policymakers should ask themselves why it is not resulting in greater overseas travel to our country. According to the Department of Commerce, August was the 10th straight month in which international travel spending in the United States declined. And 2009 will be the eighth straight year in which overseas arrivals fell short of pre-9/11 visitors to our country.
“According to the Country Brand Index report, the United States ranks #1 in brand image but remains in the bottom half of countries for ‘ease of travel’ to and within the country.
... It’s time for an entry process that is the envy of the world in its use of technology and efficient screening. And it’s time to welcome people to our shores by passing the Travel Promotion Act and promoting America as a premier travel destination.
“Our industry can create jobs and strengthen America’s image in the world. The onus is on policymakers to work with this industry, tap into the global demand and welcome millions of new visitors to our great country.”
"...why would you still want to consider baring everything on your next vacation?
First a warning: A clothing-optional vacation isn’t for everyone. For example, when I posted Schuttauf’s interview on my blog, I illustrated it with what I thought was an appropriate photo of four unclothed women running into the Baltic. The picture only showed their uncovered derrieres, but the outcry from some of my readers was loud. They demanded I remove the “not-safe-for-work” image, and because I love my readers, I did. (Even if they’re prudes.)
And by way of full disclosure, no, I haven’t taken a nakation. But I’m open to it.
Here are a few reasons you might consider vacationing in the buff.
It’s not what you think There are so many misconceptions about vacationing sans clothing, it would take an entire article to address them. But let me clear up just a few. Nudists are not perverts, and their resorts — at least the ones represented by AANR — are not seedy...
It’ll open your mind Take it from someone whose neighbors were nudists: Going clothes-free can be an enlightening experience. I only mention this because many of us are looking for a different perspective when we’re on vacation, and removing our clothes can certainly offer that.
It’s a good time “Nude recreation is fun,” says AANR’s Schuttauf. “Anyone who has ever gone skinny-dipping or as a kid romped through the back yard sprinkler in their birthday suit knows.” Fact is, most of the mainstream media coverage of nude recreation skips over this important point. Instead, we’re fed a lot of titillating nonsense — lists like the “Top 5 naked events” and “Top 5 nude beaches” that leave many of us firmly convinced that all nudists are hedonists...
It’s a deal The entire travel industry is on sale, and nude resorts are no exception. For example, the Terra Cotta Inn in Palm Springs, Calif., was offering a two-day nude sunbathing special for as little as $149 a night per couple, as I wrote this. That’s $20 a night off the normal price.
...Put differently, you might pay less for your nakation than your vacation.
It’s easy to pack You can blame Air New Zealand for this idea, since it came up with the clever ad campaigns featuring flight attendants in body paint. But packing for a clothing-optional vacation is so easy and you won’t ever have to worry about additional luggage fees. That’s a compelling argument when your carrier wants to charge $15 per bag — and more on some flights..."
Ready to strip down on your next vacation? While it’s true that you could save a couple of bucks on baggage fees and hotel rates, and that it definitely will broaden your horizons, allow me to add just one piece of advice: Try it before you book a whole week. Visit a clothing-optional club — many offer affordable day passes — and see how it feels.
If you like it, have a nakation.
If you don’t, you can join the rest of us prudes — yeah, I guess I’m probably one of them — and keep your clothes on."

Last week, stupid weather.com said Palm Springs, CA was going to be in the mid 70's this week. And what was out temperature today? 86F!!! What is it predicted to be tomorrow? 86F!!!
When I was the president of the Palm Springs chamber of commerce, we used to joke that the Florida chamber of commerce must pay off Weather.com so that they would ALWAYS predict worse weather for Palm Springs. They are NEVER right. Either they say it is going to rain and their isn't a cloud in the sky or they say we are 1o degrees colder than we are in the spring summer or fall.
You see Palm Springs is the sunniest city in the US. It is a nudists dream vacation destination. Whereas Florida is the rainiest state in the US. People on vacation crave sunshine, not rain, thus Palm Springs is real popular. And so is our resort. As the ONLY nudist vacation destination in Palm Springs, we have couples from around the world stay here. We are not just a weekend destination like most places. Our repeat guests love their vacation with us.
This week we are about 75% booked all week long. We have a few rooms left this week and weekend. Come join us in the sunshine.
Give us a call at 800-786-6938 for more information or to make a reservation. We answer the phones from 8am-10 pm PST.

Westjet a few times every year will have a big 50% off airfare sale. They just kicked one off this week. It ends midnight Friday November 6th. We have already had guests book because of the sale.
Our guests love Westjet (if you can love an airlines these days). From September to May about 30-40% of our guests come from Canada. The vast majority fly Westjet. I bet on a percent of guests, we have the highest percent of guests that fly Westjet in ALL of Palm Springs.
Hey Westjet! If you read this post, I bet we would make a very interesting article for your inflight magazine. We've been written up in the Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, and on C TV before. You would being doing your customers a great service letting them know that you fly to the top nude sunbathing resort in the US. And it's easy to get to since you have so many nonstops into sunny Palm Springs.
I have NEVER heard a single complaint about Westjet, whereas I hear lots of complaints about US air carriers.
Here's the airfare sale details from the Westjet site:
"50% off all destinations. Book Today.
Book by November 6, 2009 (11:59 p.m. MST) for travel until December 17, 2009. For Canadian and U.S. destinations travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Fares on other days MAY BE slightly higher. Advertised price already reflects a discount. Discount is applied to WestJet’s lowest regular fare. Taxes, fees and surcharges are extra where applicable. Taxes, fees and surcharges are extra where applicable. Seats at these fares are limited and may not be available on all flights. New bookings only. 100% non-refundable. All fares are shown one-Way."
It is cheapest to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays but it is not that much more expensive to fly other days of the week.
