Palm Springs is the "coolest" hip city

This is from an article that was run in Sunset Magazine last year.

The article is about the mid-century modern architecture that makes Palm Springs so cool.

Our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa is a midcentury modern hotel. We were built by Albert Frey who is one of the most famous architects of Palm Springs. We got to meet Mr. Frey before he passed away. He himself was a nudist, originally born in Europe and was very proud that one of his resorts became a nudist resort.

Our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn was originally built as a celebrity resort. Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra stayed here. So did Desi and Lucy, President Kennedy, Spencer Tracy, Marilyn Monroe and many other celebrity icons. That is one of the reasons why our rooms are so nice as our resort was built to cater to celebrities.

Our rooms are even custom painted by a famous 1960's painter, Max West. He was originally a designer of record album jackets and won 2 grammies, one for a BB King record album and one for the Blood Sweat and Tears IV record album.

The desert is calling. Who knew the '50s could be so much fun?


Slip out of the dry desert heat into the breezy lobby of the Del Marcos Hotel, and there to greet you from behind the orange-topped registration desk is none other than Ol' Blue Eyes himself, looking quite debonair. Not literally, of course. But the Warhol-ish painting certainly evokes the proper dooby-dooby-do era.

Meanwhile... two women sit poolside ... discussing Albert Frey's second house, a modest glass-and-metal box perched on the edge of the chocolate-colored hills above the hotel. That it's only about 110 miles east of Hollywood has long been reason enough for Angelenos to claim it as their private hideaway, but in the last few years, as it has blossomed with boutique hotels and — finally — some decent eateries, snowbirds from Seattle to Salt Lake City have claimed it as their own as well.

Well, because of the love for the early Hollywood glamourati who made their homes here, and the rock stars of midcentury-modern architecture — Albert Frey, Richard Neutra, William F. Celebrate local architects
The rise of the glam boutique hotel would probably come as a surprise to the godfather of desert modernism, Swiss-born Albert Frey (pronounced "fray"). His most famous Palm Springs design, the soaring, wedge-shaped Tramway Gas Station on the edge of town, was almost torn down in the name of revitalization just before his death in 1998. Today, it's the much-celebrated home of the Palm Springs Visitors Center (and close to where the famous — and utterly worthwhile — aerial-tram tours depart). Here you can pick up "Palm Springs: Brief History and Architectural Guide," a $3 booklet that lists some three dozen architectural gems and a map to find them.

You'll want to save at least a half-day for exploring the city's shops, many of which are bunched around the northern end of Palm Canyon Drive in a neighborhood called Uptown.

The funniest thing is if you check out books on mid-century modern architecture in Palm Springs, you will rarely see our resort mentioned. The city of Palm Springs even sponsors a midcentury modernism week each spring.

I asked one time, "why isn't our resort mentioned as one of Palm Springs's most famous mid-century modern buildings." I was told that families with kids take driving tours of the Palm Springs buildings and they wouldn't want parents to be embarrassed if their kids asked "what is a nudist resort?" So they don't list us.

So here we are, the resort that Albert Frey is most proud of, and yet, we are not promoted as one of Palm Springs's most historical resorts. Oh well...

Nude vacations recommended by college newspaper to improve self image

Nude vacations are becoming more and more popular. 3 weeks ago, the New Your Times had a 3 page feature article about upscale nudist resorts around the world. We were one of 5 nudist resorts that were mentioned in the article.

Newspapers and blogs from around the world have picked up on this story. Almost all of the press has been positive and we have received new bookings from first timers because of the article.

Here the Cal State Long Beach school newspaper has a nice article about nude vacations. They wrote this article because of the New York Times article.

With summer coming up, most people are starting to plan their vacations. For some, this includes planning a trip to a place where you only initially need the clothes on your back, a toothbrush and a few other personal items.

No, it is not a vacation at home or a local hotel. It is one of the many nude vacation resorts.

Clothing will not hold nudists back. They want to enjoy their vacation as true naturalists, just as they came into the world, butt-naked.

According to a New York Times article titled, "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Worries," certain search engines are adding a separate category for "nudist spa vacations" due to an increase in people searching for them. On some websites, the searches for "nude vacations" are even higher than those for "pet-friendly spas."

I usually imagine them being somewhere in Europe. But there are some right here in California, as well as in other places around the U.S. Nudists vacation anywhere from nude beaches and campgrounds to nude resorts and hotels. One may even choose between resorts that cater to adults only or ones that are family-friendly.

Initially, I thought a nude resort might make me more self-conscious than I already am. It turns out the opposite could be true. Being without clothes actually may help you become more confident about your body and breakdown psychological barriers. The American Association of Nude Recreation writes on its website, "Self-esteem is enhanced in the nudist world, where body acceptance is the norm."

Not only may these bareback resorts be a fun getaway (offering many of the same services as a clothing-only resort), they could possibly help with self-image issues. The AANR also boasts that a single day of being clothes-free relaxes people more than spending a fully-clothed weekend somewhere else...

While I'm still not too sure if an all-nude vacation is for me, I won't completely rule it out. I mean, who wouldn't like going on a vacation where you wouldn't have to worry about luggage and what to wear everyday?"

Palm Springs has always been a favorite destination for nudists. For instance we have the 2nd highest occupancy rate of all hotels in Palm Springs.

We have always found that our guests liked to either book a long 4 or 5 night weekend with us or they stayed 1 week or longer. We are a unique nudist resort. Terra Cotta Inn Palm Springs, CA has rooms available this week

Here at the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, we have noticed a slight change in vacation habits by guests in Southern California because of the recession.

We are a vacation resort. We are busy everyday of the week, not just weekends like typical nude places. We even sell out on many midweek days of the week.

Most nudist resorts in America have traditionally catered to the local weekend markets. By contrast, we have guests from all over the US, Canada, England, and Australia stay with us.

Probably 80% of our guests come from out of state or out of country.

Traditionally for us, Southern Californians have always called mainly asking for weekend getaways. Most of the time by the time they call, we are already sold out on the weekends by the guests from out of state that have booked their vacations with us in advance.

Previous to this year, only about 20% of our guests have been from California. However this year, we are booking more Californians than ever.

We have always had the most liberal check in and checkout policy for nudist resorts. You can check in as early as 10am and you can check out at 5pm the day you leave. We do not charge extra for this.

What we are finding is due to the recession, more Southern Californians then ever are taking vacation days off of work to stay with us to save money.

We now have many Southern Californians booking us on the Monday thru Thursday nights where our rooms start at $149/couple/night including complimentary breakfast and afternoon snacks. For example they will arrive at 10am on a Monday and leave at 5pm on a Tuesday. This way, they have 2 days of sun for the price of one. It is a great bargain. And since we are busy our guests know they will have just as much fun here midweek as they would have on weekends at other places.

As our Southern Californian guests are saying, Mexico, Hawaii, and the Caribbean are now too expense to vacation at. So they are now taking vacation days with us here in Palm Springs since they are not vacationing anywhere else. A number of Southern California guests are now coming here ever couple of months midweek this year as we are their only vacation destination they will go to this year.

We have always been the best value nudist resort in America. And we are the only one that is affordably luxurious.

So this week on May 12, 13, and 14 we have just 3 or 4 rooms left. On Thursday, we just have the house available.

Topless protester awarded $15,000 by city

Having been involved in local politics being a past president of the Palm Springs chamber of commerce, I know that politicians waste lots of the taxpayers money.

Here is a perfect example of pure waste by the boobs running local government.

Elizabeth Book has been protesting topless in Daytona Beach, Florida in protest of the cities public nudity ordinance.

The courts have upheld her rights to protest topless. So what do the narrow minded boobs in Daytona Beach do? They continue to harass her and arrest her again.

Why are the boobs that run our governments, so afraid of bare boobs on our beaches? Above is a picture of Mary Clare who owns our resort in Palm Springs, CA along with me. Why are politicians in Florida terrified of her dressed this way for the beach?

Now Daytona Beach has paid out a settlement of $15,000 for violating her rights. And I will bet the city paid over $100,000 in attorney fees during the whole case.

Florida is a weird state. It must be because of all the rain and the humidity, some politicians brains are wilted.

Florida has the most successful nude beach in the US at Haulover Beach in Miami. Where the neighborhood around Haulover at one time was very seedy and rundown, it is now gentrified and is the most popular beach in Florida.

Florida says that they want European tourists, yet they don't let them topless sunbathe which is the norm in Europe. How weird. You would think Florida wants to appeal to European tourism not scare it away.

I for one am very happy that Daytona Beach owned up to their human rights violations. It is only too bad the papers and TV did not print how much taxpayer money was wasted by the local politicians.

"Daytona agrees to $15,000 settlement in nudity dispute

DAYTONA BEACH -- The City Commission awarded topless protester Elizabeth Book a settlement of $15,000 Wednesday night for claims of damages due to her arrests.

Book, a 45-year-old Ormond Beach resident and mother, has shown her breasts publicly since 2004 in protest of the city's public nudity ordinance. She was arrested in March 2004 and again in July 2005.

She sued Daytona Beach, seeking $100,000 for attorneys' fees and damages stemming from what her attorney, Lawrence Walters, called negligence, false arrest and malicious prosecution.

Courts ruled in Book's favor, so the city changed its ordinance last November to include language from past federal court rulings that say a person does not have a constitutional right to public nudity if they are protesting a nudity ordinance.

Deputy City Attorney Marie Hartman said last week the settlement will dismiss Book's whole case. She added that the city's ordinance still stands."

Bare Breasts - Why are men fascinated by them?

Topless waitresses are introduced at a New Zealand restaurant and business is taking off.

This blog that you are now reading is very popular. I know that many people are interested in it because I write about nudism and nude recreation. However, I do not kid myself. I also know many people go to nudist and naturist blogs and sites to look at pictures of naked people. Guys especially.

This story as reported at a New Zealand site not only talks about the topless waitresses, but why guys are fascinated by the sight of bare breasts.

Turnover has trebled with the introduction of topless waitresses at Jo's Place.
It is, perhaps literally, a no-brainer. Most men like looking at naked breasts. Many women wonder why. Those in the business of making money out of mammaries are happy to exploit the mystery.

Take Jo Hanna, the 50-something female manager of a South Auckland bar which ignited a brouhaha by introducing topless waitresses on Thursday nights...

... It's just a gimmick to get patrons to come in."

And it's working: turnover has trebled.

Over at Alt TV, station managers are planning to welcome thousands of new viewers when their Naked News show starts this month.


Why, if half the population has them, are naked breasts still such a sought-after commercial commodity?

"It's primitive, instinctual, we're never going to change it," says Hanna, who adds her waitresses come in all shapes and sizes and are welcomed equally by her male clients.

"Men just appreciate being able to freely ogle the girls."

She's right, says Canterbury University social psychologist Garth Fletcher. The sex appeal of breasts has an innate, biological basis.

Fashionably full boobs can point to underlying health, and therefore fertility, in the same way a large peacock tail - while cumbersome and a target for predators (as any big-breasted woman can attest) - indicates good health.

But as your average man will tell you, a woman's well-being is not what he's thinking of when he ogles her cleavage. And anthropologists say it's the concealment that fuels the titillation - not the fact that breasts are there.

Social anthropologist Graeme Macrae from Massey University says societies where breasts are exposed in daily life do not share the Western fascination with boobs.

He says both men and women in Balinese society in the early 20th century went topless - and the erotic zone was the sarong-covered upper thigh.

"No one made a big fuss about breasts," he says. "But if you're looking for just one man's anthropological viewpoint, I think the interest comes from that line between what's being exposed and what's being concealed ... plunging necklines and cleavage are much more interesting than someone completely topless..."

I think this article covers (or should I say uncovers) a number of interesting points. Where the daily sight of bare breasts is normal, men are not obsessed with looking at bare breasts. The example the article gave was Bali, where women were topless but wore sarongs covering their thighs. Thus, Balanese men thought thighs were erotic. Another good example is Victorian England where ankles were covered. Naked ankles were considered very risque and erotic back then.

Nudists have always said that topless and nude sunbathing is not sexual. And this article supports that premise. Nudists see naked bodies every single day. Once you are used to the sight of the naked human body, it is very normal and not considered erotic. Thus the sight of bare breasts is not sexually charged at nudist resorts.

First timers always comment to us how surprisingly normal it is to be naked with other people right away. They assumed it would be a big adjustment taking days to feel comfortable being naked around others, and yet withing 15-30 minutes they are completely comfortable and mad at themselves that they didn't try nude sunbathing earlier in their lives. When you are at a nudsit resort, the sight of everyone else being naked quickly makes you comfortable being naked.

Reading the article, I knew the writer had not been to a nudist resort before as she would have known, nudists do not call them nudist colonies any more. Also, she would have known that most naturist camps are campgrounds where there are many kids. Naked kids at nudist camps is not a relaxing, romantic situation. It is a nice family outing, but not romantic.

New York Times article on nude vacations

A few weeks ago, The New York Times had an article about upscale nudist resorts. We were one of the 5 nudist resorts mentioned in the article.

All of the nudist resorts that were mentioned operate very differently.

One thing that I have noticed is people assume all clothing optional and nudist resorts are the same. They most certainly are not!

For instance here in Palm Springs, we cater to couples on vacation. I can not tell you how many times we have had people book another nude place here in Palm Springs midweek because we were full and then come to our place for day use as they wrongly assumed the other places were busy midweek like us.

In a letter to the editor at the New York Times, a reader writes that the NYT article was wrong with its statement "nude resorts don't pressure guests to strip." (Actually the NYT made another big error in its article by listing a swinger hotel as a nudist resort thinking they ae the same thing). The reader then proceeds to say that she was told to strip at the Grand Lido Braco in Jamaica or leave the nude beach.

I have found that our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort in Palm Springs is one of the few nudist resorts in the world that caters to women making first timers feel very comfortable, especailly the women. The old saying "happy wife, happy life" is very true. If the wife is not comfortable at a nudist resort, the couple will never come back. This is one of the reasons we have been called the most mainstream nudist resort in America.

"To the Editor: I differ with your statement that “nude resorts don’t pressure guests to strip.” On our third trip to Grand Lido Braco, in Jamaica, while on the nude side of the beach I was asked to strip or leave the beach. So, I sat with my towel around me and never entered the water.

Why was I there? My husband enjoys nude beaches and I don’t. Topless I can put up with, but I prefer not to be bottomless. We will not return to this resort and will check carefully before booking at any resort that says it has a nude beach. Clearly “clothing optional” and “nude beach” may be two very different things."

Mischa Barton topless sunbathing in Australia

I have never watched the O.C. TV show and never intend to. I do not know who Mischa Barton is, (she has ot stayed at our resort, as far as I know), but she is a star of that show. I assume it is still on the air, but I do not know, and do not care.

We have celebrity guests from time to time stay at our resort. I have had "regular" guests tell me "that is so and so who is the star of ......." staying here. The funny thing is I always ask the guest are they on Blah blah blah show and when they say yes, they are normally more interested in knowing that I do NOT know about the show and them. They don't care that they were "outed" at our resort. They think it is more interesting that some people in the world are not fans of theirs and their shows.

See, if you own a successful nudist resort in Palm Springs, you will always have celebrities at your resort from time to time and you will always be too busy taking care of guests to watch TV and know who they are.

However, I do know enough celebrities to know that they do feel very comfortable with their bodies and do enjoy topless or nude sunbathing. Mischa Barton, after the MTV Awards show went to Australia and was shot topless sunbathing at a resort as I assume she is no different than most people and likes to go topless or nude sunbathing.

I feel sorry for her that her privacy was invaded. Thus I will not post a pic of her here as I feel it is rude.

One thing I have learned is celebrities are no different than you our me. They just have more money for cosmetics and plastic surgery. I guess Mischa Barton in her early 20's has cellulite, just like many other "normal" women around the world. It seems that she wasn't mad that she was filmed topless with her breasts bare, she was mad that cellulite was shown on her legs, a major no-no by Hollywood standards. I thought, that is pretty funny, bare breasts to be photographed... OK... cellulite on legs... major No-No!!!

Nude Beach Beer to be brewed in Wisconsin this year

Nude Beach beer. That sounds like fun.

Back when Mary Clare and I used to live in Chicago, there was a small premium brewery called Steven's Point Brewery located in Wisconsin. They made some pretty good beers.

When you think of summer, you think of things like baseball, drinking iced cold beer, and topless or nude sunbathing at nude beaches or nudist resorts. Wisconsin has a great nude at Mazo Beach.

Well, the creative geniuses (meant as a compliment) at Point Brewery came up with the idea of a fun new summer beer called Nude Beach beer. As they say in their press release "What can be more fun than a nude beach?"

This story is starting to pick up press. The Creative marketing geniuses at The American Association for Nude Recreation, known as AANR (again meant as a compliment), saw an angle here for a win - win cross promotion. They contacted Point beer to acquire their Nude Beach Beer for the annual nudist convention in Michigan.

Point beer will deliver 25 cases of beer to the convention and this story has hit the papers. Even UPI carried this story of the cross marketing of Nude Beach Beer to the nudist convention.

In my opinion, everyday nude recreation is being more and more accepted as being mainstream.

Joe Martino, operating partner with Stevens Point Brewery, said the beverage company was contacted by the American Association for Nude Recreation shortly after its latest seasonal creation was announced, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

"Our members have bombarded us with messages" about Nude Beach Summer Wheat, said Carolyn Hawkins, a spokeswoman for the nudist group.

The association struck a deal with the brewery that will ensure 25 cases of the beer are on hand at the American Association for Nude Recreation's annual convention, scheduled for Aug. 11-17 at Turtle Lake Resort in Union City, Mich.

Hawkins said the brewery will find itself rewarded with newfound fame among nudists, a group she predicted would help give sales of the beer a significant boost.

Bare Necessities nude cruise company featured on CNN

Bare Necessities is featured on a story about career changes on CNN. It is always nice when nudist resort owners or in this case nude cruise company owners get mainstream press coverage. It is even nicer when non nudist stories are written and nudist resort owners are used as examples.

For instance a number of years ago, I was on the Lou Dobbs Money Show. They were profiling successful businesses and since we are the post popular hotel in Palm Springs except for the Indian casino, i was on their TV show. They sent a camera crew to our hotel.

Also a few years ago, Newsweek Magazine had an article about some of the best small businesses in America. We were picked as one of the 10 bast small businesses that they profile. A few of the other small businesses they featured were a day care center, a bicycle company, an office equipment manufacturer, and a gym. It is very nice that nudist resorts are starting to get such mainstream news coverage.

ASU over reacts to cheerleader photos

Did ASU over react to these photos dropping the cheerleader squad?

Arizona State University considered these photos racy. If you ask me, they are very tame. You would see more skin on women in bikinis going down to the river at Lake Havasu in the summer, then you see on these women.

Now whether you think the idea of cheerleaders for football teams is sexiest or not, the issue is these pics were taken privately and the University considered them too explicit that the cheerleader squad. Thus they fired the cheerleaders.

Luckily Fox TV cared enough to run this important story. Here it is:

Arizona State University may have less cheerful sidelines at sporting events next season.

After racy photos of members of the university’s cheerleading squad were spotted on a campus blog called “The Dirty,” the school cut the squad completely, MyFOXPhoenix reported.

The school's athletic director, Lisa Love, made the decision Thursday evening.The pictures on the blog feature 6 of the cheerleaders posing in nothing but their bras and panties.

Although only six members of the squad are shown in the photographs, the entire 16-member squad will suffer the consequences, MyFOXPhoenix reported.

The cheerleaders told MyFOXPhoenix that the photographs were a result of college kids goofing off, and they believe the decision to disband the team has been in the works for a while. The photographs are two years old, and were taken at a “cheer party...”

What a difference in policies of different universities. Mary Clare and I graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign. The university averages 40,000 students a year. Their alumni magazine comes out 6 times a year and profiles 1 famous graduate each year. They normally profile famous celebrities, business people, graduates winning Nobel prizes, Pulitzer prizes, etc. Yet, in the Jan 2003 issue, they profiled the only couple ever to graduate from the U of I and start a famous nudist resort, us.

Yes, The Univ of Illinois was proud enough of Mary Clare and me to profile us and our nudist resort as one of their famous graduates. We work naked everyday. Yet, ASU fires their cheerleading squad for goofing off and taking pictures in their panties and bras. Go figure.

The How to look good naked show

I have never seen the "How to look good naked show." It does sound like it is a very body positive show. The show started in England, another version here in the US and now they are going to be broadcasting the US version in Australia. Here is a description of the show:

One of the reasons American women are so nervous about trying topless or nude sunbathing at nudist resorts is they feel very insecure about their bodies. For decades women's magazines have been telling women they were not pretty enough or sexy enough unless they bought certain fashions, had plastic surgeries, but certain diet foods or books, etc. These magazines and the fashion industry want women to be insecure because then they will keep buying their products.

Miley Cyrus letter to the editor from Canada

I was on the Edmonton Sun's website as I am going to write a story about them next. I came across this letter to the editor. It is good to know, I am not the only cynic about this "story."

And in my opinion, the media is not manipulated. They are looking for stories just like this. The media is no longer in the news business. They are in the entertainment business. With the dumbing down of America most Americans don't want to be informed about world events, they just want to entertained as they sit in their easy chairs.

I had never heard of Miley before last year, but with Billy at the helm she will probably be more famous than Britney or Paris by next year. Billy Ray is to be congratulated for his deviousness. The Miley Cyrus phony nudity controversy

Call me a cynic, but the Miley Cyrus nudity controversy sure smells like the Vanessa Hudgens uproar all over again, but on a tamer level.

I have always said that nudists come from all walks of life. Name a profession and you will find nudists. Earlier this week when I wrote about Brian Williams the NBC anchor a nudsit e-mailed me saying people at his office knew him and he was a responsible journalist.

Well we have met many Hollywood pr reps, agents, tv & movie producers, actors, and actresses, singers, etc. When you are at the level of Miley Cyrus NOTHING is not planned to maximize visibility and maintain the brand known as Miley Cyrus growing.

The media then gets into a feeding frenzy reporting on the "controversy" which is exactly what the Miley Cyrus handlers wanted. Look at how Vanessa Hudgens fees went up after her photos.

Personally, I wish the media would cover real news like corruption in government, etc. instead of phony pr stunts like this.

Naked gardening is very nice and relaxing. You feel one with nature. Plus, when you are nude gardening, it is very easy to clean up when you are done.

Six degrees of separation is true in the nudist world

Nudists come from all walks of life. They are democrats, republicans, libertarians, and non voters. They are tall, short, and average height. They are thin, heavy, and average weight. They are young, old, gen x'ers, boomers, etc. They are all occupations. In short anyone can be a nudist.

Yesterday, I wrote about Brian Williams, the NBC anchor making fun of the New York Times nudist resorts article. I posted a response to his blog (which I posted here yesterday). Well he did print my post and he also printed a post after mine from the Director of AANR inviting him to visit a nudist resort. That was very fair of him.

Now about the six degrees of separation. I got an e-mail from a nudist who wrote me:

"A well reasoned and appropriate response that you submitted to Brian
Williams' blog. It's important that someone do the role you've taken
on, to counter misinformation about clothing optional recreation.
I must say, however, that Brian Williams is a first-class journalist.
People in our office work with him and vouch for his integrity and
professionalism. I know you said you don't know him, which is fine,
and which is why I wanted to give you my perspective.
He wasn't really poking fun at naturists, but at the New York Times.
Okay, it's a slippery slope, but I'd much rather trash commentators
who really get snide or overly clever to marginalize what we find is
a legitimate pastime (and for you, your bread-and-butter)."

So a nudist is familiar with Brian Williams. Pretty cool.

Who knows, maybe even one of his co-anchors is a nudist.

Word of mouth is terrible in the nudist industry. No where else do people go away on vacation, have their best vacations ever, go home and not tell their friends, neighbors or co-workers where they went. Most of our guests when they tell people where they went, they say they stayed at the Marriott in Palm Springs.

Because Palm Springs is famous for nudist resorts because of us, some guests have even said that when they say they went to Palm Springs, friends tease them saying, "I bet you went to a nudist resort," to which they reply "yeah right."

Because nudists are everywhere, you don't know what kind of connections they have. Obviously here someone works with people who know Brian Williams. We even got to go to the Academy Awards one year because of one of our guests.

So six degrees of separation is very true in the nudist world.
